I enjoy supervising (individually, in dyads or small groups) master's level social workers who are working toward their advanced clinical practice licensure. I have been providing clinical supervision for 24 years, and it brings a significant level of joy to my work. I have overseen work in schools, hospitals, psychiatric facilities, nursing homes and out-patient psychotherapy settings, with all ages and with a wide range of issues (see the About Me page for more information on my particular areas of clinical focus).
Virtual and In-person Options: I admit that I prefer in-person sessions at my office in Georgetown--supervision is sometimes richer and deeper when we meet face-to-face. The pandemic taught me to get comfortable with virtual sessions, though, and I meet with many supervisees virtually now. I have supervisees living and working all over Texas and we get the work done and feel a strong connection, even through the screen.
My supervision sessions primarily include case consultation and integration of didactic material as opportunities arise organically. We use role plays to help plan for and rehearse difficult conversations with clients and colleagues, and sometimes I do brief demonstrations of particular models/interventions. When relevant, I recommend reading materials, videos or training opportunities that can augment the mastery of clinical techniques. We stay mindful of ourselves holistically, as humans with lives and histories and challenges that can interact in meaningful ways with our chosen career. Being comfortable with our common humanity in and out of sessions, increases our efficacy as psychotherapists.
I pull from an integrated model for supervision—incorporating concepts from person-centered/relational supervision models, and from developmental theories of therapist’s professional growth. My role is to co-create a space for you to be open, honest, and vulnerable about all that happens on the job, and also in the interplay of personal and professional. In that space, I will model professionalism and healthy vulnerability, and the effective provision of support and growth opportunities, trusting you to also ask for what you need.
As you grow and mature as a clinician, your needs will change, as will my role in your supervision. Ronnestad and Skovholt’s (2003) analysis found 14 themes of counselor development. These are:
1. Professional development involves an increasing higher-order integration of the professional self and the personal self.
2. The focus of functioning shifts dramatically over time from internal to external to internal.
3. Continuous reflection is a prerequisite for optimal learning and professional development at all levels of experience.
4. An intense commitment to learn propels the developmental process.
5. The cognitive map changes: Beginning practitioners rely on external expertise, seasoned practitioners rely on internal expertise.
6. Professional development is long, slow, continuous process that can also be erratic.
7. Professional development is a life-long process.
8. Many beginning practitioners experience much anxiety in their professional work. Over time, anxiety is mastered by most.
9. Clients serve as a major source of influence and serve as primary teachers.
10. Personal life influences professional functioning and development throughout the professional life span.
11. Interpersonal sources of influence propel professional development more than ‘impersonal’ sources of influence.
12. New members of the field view professional elders and graduate training with strong affective reactions.
13. Extensive experience with suffering contributes to heightened recognition, acceptance and appreciation of human variability.
14. For the practitioner there is a realignment from self as hero to client as hero.
